In fact, our commercial castings give us the resources and experience we need to reach new heights in productivity and product design.
Commercial Metals accurately defines our activities. At production facilities in Texas and China, Hensley manufactures and markets low alloy, carbon and wear-resistant steel castings weighing from 1 to 2,500 pounds. We also import steel and iron castings, steel forgings, parts machined from bar, and other metal products. These parts include machining, paint, plating, assembly and other values added.

Metallurgy
Our quality/inspection department utilizes non-destructive examination (NDE) methods to assure that every casting is of the highest quality. Our staff metallurgists are available to assist with questions you may have concerning specific alloys and heat treatments required.
Pattern Shop
The bridge linking your engineering drawings to the final, precision casting is the Hensley pattern shop. One of the largest pattern shops in the Southwestern United States, we employ skilled patternmakers with more than 150 years of combined experience. A fully equipped metalworking shop operates within the pattern shop, rounding out our wood, metal, and urethane pattern-making capabilities.
Core-Making and Molding
Hensley’s core-making and molding departments handle a wide range of casting weights and configurations. Molds are made with shell, air set, and green sand processes, while cores are made with shell, air set, and iso-cure processes. The properties of sand are critical to the molding and core-making processes, so the composition of our sand is continually tested to ensure that the constituents are in proper balance.
Melting and Pouring
Hensley is an industry leader in the art and science of steel melting and pouring. Steel is formulated to exact specifications in each of our two, five-ton electric arc furnaces. Heats are not released for pouring until the Melting Lab approves them. In order to maintain proper chemistry, analyses of each heat are taken at various stages throughout the entire melting process. Final testing includes pouring and processing of standard ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) bars on every heat. The Quality Assurance Lab then tests these bars to assure they meet all customer specifications. Chemical and physical certification to ASTM standards is available upon request.
Heat Treating
Heat treating is conducted to meet specific hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, and impact requirements. Castings are normalized, tempered, and stress-relieved in ovens designed and built to Hensley’s specifications. When necessary, we may also use outsourcing for heat treatment. Hensley’s modern and efficient finishing area is ideally suited to the overall flow of the manufacturing process.
